4-hour "OVERVIEW OF GRID-DIRECT SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) SYSTEMS"
Applied for 4 PDH/CE; 4 educ. hrs. towards NABCEP tech. sales exam.

Thursday, February 29, 2014 (8 am to 12 noon)

By Solar Energy International SEI (CO)

Career paths and opportunities in the PV industry are many, but the common link is a fundamental understanding of the technologies involved, and the more knowledge you have, the more successful you will be. Get the technical and business PV knowledge you need to effectively communicate with employers, customers, project partners, contractors, and manufacturers. This 4-hour course will provide a broad yet thorough business and technical introduction to the PV industry.

Counts for the following credits:

  • 4 PDH/CE for Florida Engineers
  • 4 educational hours towards the NABCEP PV Technical Sales Exam

Who should attend:  Engineers, Electricians, Architects, and PV Industry Professionals, including Lawyers; Financiers; Project Developers; Sales, Marketing and Manufacturer Representatives; and Industry Newcomers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

8:00 – 10:30 Introduction to the Solar Industry and PV Systems

Welcome and Introductions.  As PV equipment prices continue to drop and the installation process becomes more streamlined, the ROI of PV becomes even more attractive, from the standpoint of consumers, businesses, and investors. We will discuss PV market trends of the region and how to tap into this growing business opportunity. We will explore the features and applications of PV systems, and discuss the components that comprise PV systems.

10:30 – 10:45 Break

10:45 – 11:15 PV Modules
We will discuss the pros and cons of the different types of modules commonly used within the industry today. This technology is reliable and has been proven over many decades, but there is a lot to learn about how it works, including: the different types of PV cell technologies and their appropriate application, the impacts of environmental factors on PV module output, and warranty considerations.

11:15 – 12:00 Solar Site Analysis
Solar site analysis is one of the most important PV system design elements. Maximizing the energy production of a PV system revolves around the sun – that might seem obvious, but how do you know where to mount a PV array, which direction to point it, and at what degree to angle it? While everyone knows that a solar module in the shade is about as useful as a car without gas, what you might not know is just how involved selecting an optimal year-round, shade-free location is. Further complications include seasonal and time-of-use rate plans, impacting the dollar value of energy that is generated by a PV system. Understanding the solar resource is a prerequisite for optimal design and for accurately forecasting energy bill savings and financial returns.
